University lecturer PD Dr. med. Gernot Bonkat studied Human Medicine at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and the Julius Maximilian University in Würzburg. After completing his medical studies, Gernot Bonkat initially worked in Switzerland (Olten) and Germany (Sangerhausen, Würzburg). In 2007, he joined the team at the Basel University Hospital, where he completed his specialist training in urology. In 2012, a one-year clinical-scientific sabbatical at the renowned Tygerberg Hospital of the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, followed. In 2013, Gernot Bonkat habilitated and was given the venia legendi, the authorization to teach urology at the University of Basel. Until 2016, when alta uro was established, Gernot Bonkat worked at the Basel University Hospital, most recently as Senior Consultant.
Gernot Bonkat holds the European title of Specialist Consultant (Facharzt), Fellow of the European Board of Urology (FEBU), and is regularly nominated as an examiner for the annual European Specialist Examination. Gernot Bonkat is an active member of numerous urological specialist societies. In 2015, he was appointed Chairman of the Urological Infection Guideline Panel of the European Society of Urology (EAU). In addition, Gernot Bonkat is a member of the EAU Section for Urological Infections (ESIU), the German (DGU) and Swiss Society of Urology (SGU).
Since 2009, Gernot Bonkat has been a senior scientist at the Center for Biomechanics & Calorimetry Basel (COB) and Department of Biomedical Engineering (DBE) of the University of Basel. He is the author of more than 200 scientific articles, congress contributions, and book chapters.
